If you’re an avid computer gaming enthusiast, you know that modern games can be incredibly demanding on your computer’s hardware. This can lead to overheating issues that affect your gaming experience and may even shorten the lifespan of your components. An AIO (All in One) liquid cooler could be the solution you’ve been looking for.
In this article, we’ll explain what an AIO liquid cooler is, why it’s superior to air cooling, and what to consider when choosing the best option for your PC.
- What is an AIO liquid cooler?
- Choosing the right radiator
- The heatsink is an integral part of the cooling system
- Choose a reliable and reputable brand
What is an AIO liquid cooler?
All computers come with cooling systems to help dissipate heat and keep vital components like the CPU cool enough to operate efficiently. Most standard setups use a combination of heatsinks and internal fans to dissipate heat. However, when it comes to more effective cooling — especially for gaming PCs and overclocked CPUs — AIO liquid coolers are a popular choice.
An AIO liquid cooler works similarly to a car radiator. Here’s a simple breakdown of how it functions:
- The coolant circulates through the system, absorbing heat from the CPU.
- The heated coolant flows to the radiator, where internal fans push the heat out through the vents.
Aesthetically, they look better than standard air cooling systems, and they are more efficient. Some gaming enthusiasts also enjoy the bragging rights of owning a “water-cooled” system.
Choosing the right radiator
There are typically three sizes of radiator for AIO cooling systems:
- Single – 1 fan, 120-140mm wide
- Double – 2 fans, 240-280mm wide
- Triple – 3 fans, 360-420mm wide
You need to know which size you require and whether it will fit inside your computer case.
This also depends largely on your setup. If you have a mid-range CPU, a single fan radiator will do. The Intel Core i5 is an example of a mid-range CPU. For Core i7 and i9 CPUs, you’ll want a double or triple fan radiator to proficiently disperse the heat these chips produce while gaming.
Ideally, you’ll choose your radiator before deciding on a computer case. This way you can select a case big enough to house the radiator. There is usually no problem fitting a single fan radiator in any computer case, but if you want a double or triple fan radiator, then you need to consider case size.
The heatsink is an integral part of the cooling system
A critical component of any AIO liquid cooler is the heatsink, also known as the cooling block. This part sits directly on the CPU and draws heat away from the chip. Aluminium blocks are very common, but a heatsink made from copper is superior at conducting heat away from the CPU, so you may want to consider a copper block.
Before purchasing a heatsink, first check that the block supports your motherboard’s block socket. Water cooling systems usually come with brackets and mounts for both AMD and Intel CPUs. However, if you have a newer or older chip on your motherboard, check that your cooling system has the appropriate mount for a correct fit.
Choose a reliable and reputable brand
Before deciding on the right AIO liquid cooling system for your desktop computer, make sure you choose a brand that’s recognisable, reliable, and reputable. Cheaper cooling systems sometimes fail within the first few months of intensive use due to pump failure or radiator defects.
Consider brands such as Corsair, Cooler Master, and EKWB. These brands are the golden standard of liquid cooling systems. They may cost more upfront but are built to last and provide consistent cooling. If your budget is tight, consider skipping unnecessary visual extras like RGB lighting in favour of investing in a robust cooling system.
An unreliable liquid cooling system can not only result in overheating but may also damage your CPU and other components. It’s better to spend a little more upfront than to risk costly repairs or replacements down the line.
