Barracuda Networks, a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, has recently released new findings showing that one in three Australian organizations impacted by ransomware experienced multiple attacks over the past year. This alarming statistic highlights a growing trend of repeated cyberattacks, underscoring significant vulnerabilities in businesses’ defenses.

According to the Ransomware Insights Report 2025, a troubling pattern emerges in Australia, where 67% of companies that were attacked more than once reported struggling with an overwhelming number of security tools. Furthermore, 62% of these organizations noted poor integration between their security systems, creating critical visibility gaps that cybercriminals can easily exploit.

The insights shared in the report come from an international survey conducted by Barracuda in partnership with Vanson Bourne. The study gathered feedback from 2,000 IT and security leaders across North America, Europe, and Australia, revealing the widespread nature of these ongoing cybersecurity challenges.

The findings reveal that ransomware continues to be a persistent and highly profitable threat, exploiting complex security systems and coverage gaps to launch multifaceted attacks aimed at maximum disruption and financial gain.

The research indicates that:

  • 57% of organizations worldwide were impacted by ransomware, with 67% of those in healthcare and 65% in local government experiencing attacks.
  • Ransomware payments remain a problem in Australia. 43% of Australian ransomware victims paid the attackers in hopes of recovering or restoring their data. However, 41% of Australian organizations have put in place solid backup and disaster recovery systems.

Globally, only 32% of ransomware victims paid to recover their data, with that figure rising to 37% among those who were attacked multiple times.

Many organizations affected by ransomware still face significant gaps in their security coverage. Despite email being a major entry point for attacks, only 45% of Australian organizations surveyed have implemented email security solutions, leaving them exposed to cyber threats.

  • Email remains a key attack vector for ransomware: 71% of global organizations that experienced an email breach were subsequently targeted by ransomware.

Ransomware attacks are becoming increasingly complex. In Australia, 26% of the ransomware incidents involved data encryption, while a large portion of the attacks also included:

  • 21% involved the theft of data.
  • 25% included the publication of stolen data.
  • 32% saw additional malicious payloads being deployed.
  • 31% involved the installation of backdoors for ongoing access.

These findings demonstrate the evolving and sophisticated nature of ransomware attacks, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity defenses across all sectors.

The ripple effects of a successful ransomware attack are growing more severe. In Australia, the consequences of such attacks have been particularly damaging, with several significant outcomes:

  • 51% of businesses suffered damage to their brand and reputation
  • 49% faced substantial recovery costs
  • 25% lost existing customers
  • 25% missed out on potential new business opportunities
  • 35% experienced productivity losses among employees

Dan McLean, Country Manager for ANZ at Barracuda, stated, “The data clearly shows that ransomware is becoming an increasingly dangerous threat, and fragmented security defenses leave organizations highly exposed.”

He continued, “In Australia, we’re noticing that well-intentioned investments in a variety of security tools often create disconnected environments, leading to gaps in visibility.”

“To combat the growing ransomware threat, it’s essential to focus on simplification, integration, and intelligent automation rather than adding more security tools. Ransomware isn’t just about data loss—it’s causing serious disruptions, from customer losses to damage to a company’s reputation,” McLean emphasized.

McLean further stressed that “Australian businesses need to take a more proactive approach by implementing integrated protection that not only stops threats but also facilitates rapid detection, quick response, and effective recovery. This approach will reduce the overall risk exposure and help contain the impact of any security breach across the organization’s digital landscape.”

The research was commissioned by Barracuda and conducted by independent research firm Vanson Bourne, gathering responses from 2,000 senior IT and business security decision-makers from organizations with 50 to 2,000 employees. The survey spanned multiple industries across regions such as the U.S., UK, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, the Nordics, Australia, India, and Japan, with fieldwork conducted in April and May 2025.

Conclusion

The Barracuda Ransomware Insights Report highlights the increasing threat of ransomware attacks in Australia, with one in three organisations experiencing repeated attacks. Poor integration of security tools and fragmented defences leave businesses vulnerable to sophisticated, multifaceted ransomware attacks.

At Computer Cures, we emphasise the importance of ransomware data recovery and adopting integrated, simplified security systems that enable rapid detection, swift response, and effective recovery to minimise risk and protect against ongoing threats.
