upgrade to macOS Big Sur
Think you should upgrade to macOS Big Sur? Read this first.

Software updates are packed with new features, functionalities, and security improvements. The newly released macOS Big Sur is no different. But, upgrading may not be in your best interest – even if your Mac is compatible.

Should you take the leap? Or hold out? Here are three questions to ask yourself before you decide.

1. Is my Mac’s model compatible with macOS Big Sur?

Apple generally tries to ensure as many older Mac models are compatible with new software updates.

If your Mac is one of the following, it should work with macOS Big Sur:

  • iMac (2014 and later)
  • iMac Pro (2017 and later)
  • Mac mini (2014 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2013 and later)
  • MacBook (2015 and later)
  • MacBook Air (2013 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (Late 2013 and later)

If you use a Mac that’s older than the above, it’s not compatible. In this case, don’t try to install macOS Big Sur.

2. Am I worried I won’t like macOS Big Sur?

Unlike smaller updates and security patches, macOS Big Sur adds new features and alters the appearance of your computer. Menus look different, icons have changed, and many interfaces resemble those found on iOS devices like your iPhone. Check out the screenshot below.

3. Have I backed up my Mac?

Before you make any changes to your Mac – or any computer for that matter – it’s crucial to back up your data. Despite your best efforts, things can go wrong, and no software update is worth losing your cherished family photos.

There are several ways to back up your Mac. You can use Time Machine, an external hard drive, a NAS system, or cloud-based storage. Ideally, use two different types of backup, just in case one fails.

Speaking of failures, if you do end up suffering data loss during an operating system upgrade, don’t give up right away. A professional data recovery service may help you retrieve lost or corrupted data.

It’s your call

You know the risks. You understand the potential rewards. If you’ve decided upgrading to macOS Big Sur is the right move, go for it. Just triple-check you’ve got a working backup of your data before you proceed.
