A good quality webcam has become crucial to any home office with more people working from home, remotely or both. In addition, the need for a webcam to access Zoom or Microsoft Teams video calls has increased. Most laptops have a built-in webcam, but a separate webcam might be necessary depending on your requirements or if you’re working from a PC. There are many to choose from, so we have created a list of our top five webcam recommendations and the best-suited applications.
We have considered the following criteria to review the best work-from-home webcams for you.
Resolution – a webcam’s resolution is the same as a television, a measure used to describe the sharpness or clarity of the picture. The higher the resolution, the better the quality. A resolution of 720p is the minimum, but we recommend 1080p, which is the standard.
Frames per second – sometimes referred to as FPS, this is the rate at which consecutive images are displayed per second. Just like resolution, the higher the number, the better the quality. As a rule of thumb, you should get a webcam with a minimum of 30 fps.
Microphones – A microphone in a webcam is called a ‘built-in’ microphone and provides better quality by drowning out background noise because it sits up close to your mouth. The only variation is a single or dual built-in microphone. A dual built-in microphone will deliver better quality, but a single microphone still provides decent-quality sound.
Mounting system – A user-friendly mounting system will allow you to easily attach your webcam to the top of your monitor; you may also receive a separate tripod. There’s not much difference in mounting systems, but it’s good to ensure the system on your webcam will suit your specific needs.
Field of view – A field of view (FOV) is the width of your camera shot. A standard FOV is 78 degrees wide which is great for most applications. However, your picture is more likely to be distorted if you go for a webcam with a larger FOV, you will also appear smaller in the frame.
